I learned German and French at school as languages to read, speak and write. I have since learned Koine Greek and Coptic as reading languages. I have even taught Coptic. I really have to work to keep Coptic and Greek as functional reading languages, whereas I can still read French and German fairly easily with the help of a good dictionary. I would suggest that the extra effort taken to learn to read and write German would be well worth it.
